But how did you recolor the lineart? I tried doing your method but it just keeps disappearing and won't let me. It says "Linework not available". Is there something I missed?

i hope you don't mind me trying to answer.  i was confused, too.  but i just googled "color with clipping mask" and i found this basic thing to try to explain what it is and how to color with it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjcEtL…  i haven't tried it yet, but this is something new that i thought i'd try to do after looking at this art and watching the video :D.

hope it helps~

I used your tutorial as a reference for my most recent picture! Mostly for the hair (since I went kind of lazy for the skin). I thought you'd like to see so here: midevalexponents2sqr.deviantar…

Thanks for the tutorial. Mind if I ask? Did you use a layer for every tone you made (a layer for shadow, a layer for dark, a layer for highlight, etc.) or you just made a layer - for example, "Hair" - then put every tone from shades to highlights in it? About the gradients, did you use "Color Burn" and "Screen" layers? If yes, did you do it for the shades too? And the last, did you use polygonal lasso to fill in the shade? I'm very new in this kind of thing. Sorry if I looked like overwhelming you with my questions.

Ah, sorry for my bad English, it's not my native language.

Thanks, this is really useful. I will definately look at this a lot while refining my artwork because I usually just take the rough lineart and color that in. XD
then again, my parents dont give my permission to control what I do with my life, which gives me no time to do what I want, even during the summer...so...I have an excuse at the moment. XD

Its also a good way :D But more challenging. For example this work was made "at once" technique, on max 3 layers :'D www.facebook.com/media/set/?se…
Sticking to some order surely takes away creative freedom at some point, but makes working much faster XD;

I'm really impressed! I'm trying to (I guess I could call it this) research myself a lot of the basics because looking back I initially learned them incorrectly TT^TT it makes sense that it takes away a little creative freedom (as it is more structured) but I think that is okay for when you're learning y'know? Having the basics down lets you develop your own style from the basics ^^ that way you earn your creativity back so to speak haha

I have an old WACOM tablet that I used for the longest time, but I could never get over the disconnect when drawing on a computer screen using a tablet. I use an iPad and a GoSmart stylus (which I've been really impressed with >.<) have you ever used one?

This is quite similair to the way I do it, but what exactly do you mean with the Clipping Mask? I'm not familiar with that tool (I use Photoshop CS5 btw).
Reply
:iconleechaolan1:
LeeChaolan1 Featured By Owner Jun 22, 2014
How I use the clipping mask is I fill my lineart with grey, then select my 'color' layer, right click and 'create clipping mask' so that then when I go to color later, or add shadows and highlights using multiply and overlay, I won't go over the area I'm meant to color.

So essentially clipping masks help to stay within the lines, or color just the lines without affecting the rest etc.

Though I'm using CS2 so it might be a little different for CS5. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry, I still don't really get it xD You fill the line art on the line art layer? With the bucket or a brush? And how do you mean 'you don't go over the area you're meant to color'? I'm sorry, I just don't really get it :$

Okay, maybe if I explain the process a little better?

First, I create a layer and that is the lineart layer. I lock that layer.
Then, I create a layer beneath that and name it base grey. I use the magic wand tool to select all the spaces around the lineart that IS NOT meant to be colored. Then I invert the selection, and fill with grey. This way, everywhere I want color is now grey.
With this done, I create three more layers above 'base grey', though they are beneath the lineart layer. The first is set to overlay, i use this for highlights, using shades of grey only. The second I set to multiply, I use this for shadows, also greys only. The last I leave normal and call this color. This is the only layer that I use colors on. Then I select all three of these layers and right click, create clipping mask. This means they are now 'clipped' to "base grey". This means if I am on any of these three layers and I draw somewhere that this base grey color is not, it will not show up. If I draw on the grey area, it will show. This means that I can be as messy as I like, and the color will still only show up where it is meant to be.
